Researchers have discovered an immune cell that is important for preventing disease in the human body. This cell is also capable of eliminating cancer and fighting viruses such as Sars-Cov-2.

American researchers have obtained this information by experimenting on rats. The data of this research has been published in the scientific journal 'Cell'. These immune cells, called human type-2 innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), can be expanded outside the human body and can defeat tumor survival and eliminate cancer cells.

"We have identified ILC-2 cells as a new member of the cell family, capable of directly killing any type of cancer; Which includes blood cancer and solid tumors,' said Professor Jianhua Yu, Department of Hematology and Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation, City of Hope, California, USA.

Jianhua Yu also said that in the future these cells could be produced, stored by freezing and applied to patients. T-cell-based therapies such as cART cells, which require the patient's own cells due to their unique properties, may not be necessary for ILC2S cells. These cells can be collected from a physically healthy donor.

To test human ILC2S cells, Professor Yu and his team first isolated these cells from a blood sample. They have created an innovative platform. which can grow ILC2S cells harvested from the human body up to 200-fold.




They then injected these externally expanded cells into mice with solid tumors. These include pancreatic cancer, lung cancer and glioblastoma. Later experiments showed that these expanded cells could eliminate these tumors.


However, Professor Yu said, the ILC2S cells do not need to be taken from the cancer patient's own cells. That is, these cells can be collected and stored from another healthy person to treat a cancer patient.
